As dusk falls over a wooden hut somewhere in the seas around Haiti, an intense power is brewing. Baron Samedi is preparing to engage in a little voodoo in this five-reel, 25-payline slot from Yggdrasil, which is undoubtedly one of their most intriguing creations yet.
If you were hoping to get into this ancient religion, you couldn’t really have picked a better teacher. Baron Samedi is a loa, a spirit of Haitian voodoo - one of its most important at that – and essentially embodies death and fertility. Here he’s portrayed, as he very often is, with a top hat and black outfit, which is reminiscent of the typical Haitian style of preparing the dead for the afterlife.
The slot itself takes place inside the hut. The reels are set against a table covered in cards, surrounded by everything the Baron needs – the skull of a bird, a flickering candle, a smouldering cigar... it’s pretty creepy even just to look at. Add in a soundtrack with an intense beat that creates plenty of suspense, and well – you can’t help but be enthralled.
Baron Samedi is the highest-paying symbol, followed by his wife, the Baroness, and then the voodoo dolls. There’s a scary-looking wild, which substitutes for all regular symbols.
Look out for the ‘Free Spin’ symbols – getting two of these will trigger a respin, which comes with three collectible cards. Three or more ‘Free Spins’ symbols will trigger the extra spins feature – three symbols will give you seven extra spins plus 50 coins; four symbols unlock twelve extra spins and 375 coins; and five symbols will reward you with fifteen extra spins and a huge 25,000 coins.
Finally, there’s the collectible card feature. There are 36 cards to collect, divided up into three categories of 12. You can see them at any time by clicking on the holder in the top-right corner of the reels. You’ll notice another holder on the left, and in between, three empty places. Cards are placed here before they’re applied to a spin, and each one can modify the reels or multiply to give you the chance of receiving a bigger win.
If you manage to complete a collection of cards, you’ll be awarded three extra spins with that card locked in the first position. Each category is made up of four strength levels. I is the easiest, and IV is the most difficult to collect.
There are too many cards to explain them all fully, but the green category features wilds and mystery symbols, which will be transformed into one symbol at the end of each spin. The red category consists of wild reel modifiers, and the purple category has multipliers, symbol upgrade cards, and cards that will give you a guaranteed five-of-a-kind win. Check out the game’s paytable to learn more about the different types of cards.
If you’re looking to try out this mysterious practice for yourself, there’s no time like the present... come and play Baron Samedi!
